Teaching Materials and methods

The general English classes are small, allowing plenty of one-to-one attention.  The courses cover subjects such as time, travel in the UK, work and relationships, accommodation and the News; and skills such as how to meet and get to know people, phone for information, write a good letter and understand forms.

At The Well English Language School, you will:

  • follow a grammatically based course
  • learn to communicate as well as be grammatically accurate
  • get plenty of speaking and listening practice (including pronunciation)
  • practice a mix of all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
  • learn in a variety of ways - as a whole class, in groups and individually, through visual, auditory methods and movement
  • be part of a fun, positive, welcoming class
The materials used are a combination of EFL textbooks, ESOL Skills for Life and current materials adapted from media.  The classes are referenced to the ESOL Core Curriculum and the ESOL Citizenship materials and relate to life in London and the UK.

Teachers

The courses are all taught by Alex Young.  Some of the lessons may be taught by other suitably qualified teachers.

Alex Young graduated with an honours degree in English Literature at Reading University in 1989.  After doing a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course, he taught English Language and Literature at Selçuk University in Turkey for 2 years.  He then taught in a private language school in London, before doing a PGCE (Post graduate Certificate in Secondary Education) and teaching English in a Secondary school.  He later joined an employment training company in South East London, helping clients find work.  In the last five years he worked in the ESOL Skills for Life department, first as tutor and academic co-ordinator and most recently as manager. At this time he gained a DELTA (Diploma in English teaching to Adults) qualification and top up qualifications at level 4 in subject specialism and level 5 in generic teaching.  He has also trained teachers on City and Guilds and CELTA courses. He is a member of the Institute for Learning.
